Isn't surprising how a small country like Belize can turn out to be such a hot-favorite destination for vacationers and retirees from the developed world? This is more so with North Americans. People from that part of the world are flocking to this Central American country.

Why?

They are buying and renting vacation and retirement houses here. If you’ve heard about this movement you must be wondering what is so appealing about this tiny country. Well, we’ve been here for more than a decade and we can confidently share with you some amazing details about this region.

Superb Climate

Ever visited the tropics? If not then know that the weather and climate, in general, is much warmer than in Northern hemisphere. The temperatures range between 80 degrees Fahrenheit and about 90 degrees Fahrenheit. This is an excellent range for anyone who wants to enjoy a warm vacation or settle down after retirement in a warmer environment.

Take Corozal area in Belize for instance. This breezy seaside town receives less rain than most of the areas down south. Several hundred expats live in the Corozal District but the number usually swells during the months when it’s cold in North America. This partly explains why the houses for rent in Corozal Belize are usually in such high demand throughout the year.

English is the Official Language

One of the challenges that expats and visitors face when they travel to a foreign land is the language barrier. In many cases, you’ll find people who speak a very different language from the one you are used to. So you might have to engage the services of a translator or struggle to learn the official language of your host country.

The amazing thing about this area is that though the country is home to dozens of nationalities they speak and use English as the official language. What a relief to North Americans whose native language is English.

A Wonderful and Hospitable People

Belizeans are known for their hospitality and merrymaking. They have a special liking for North Americans and visitors in general. Part of the reason for this is that many locals here have either worked or lived in North America or they have friends and relatives who have done so. This brings about a feeling of commonness between them and the visitors. Don’t be surprised to find your next door neighbor has lived and worked in your neighborhood back in your homeland.

Amazing Things to Do and See

For a country this size you’ll be surprised by the seemingly endless number of exciting things to do and see here. Sample the following:

The Maya Ruins and Temples

These offer you fascinating insights into the ancient Mayan Civilization. This civilization left behind awe-inspiring temples, underground ritual chambers, and a magnificent array of art in jade, gold, pottery, paintings and stone carvings. You can travel back in time and learn about the way of life of this ancient civilization by making a visit to these magnificent temples.

Dangira and Hopkins Village

If you want a feel of authentic Belizean life and culture then this destination is your best bet. Also known as the country’s Culture Capital, Dangira is renowned as the birthplace of the popular Punta Rock music genre.

Best Beaches

If you love the beaches then you should be ready for the 175-mile coastline extending along the Caribbean Sea. You have more than enough area to do your sea sports be it diving, snorkeling, plain sea combing. You’ll certainly love some of the best beaches situated on Caye Caulker, Ambergris Caye, Hopkins, Southern Belize, and Placencia.

The Barrier Reef is not just an attraction on its own merit but also performs a crucial role as a barrier protecting visitors from experiencing undercurrents while in the ocean.

A Wide Range of Flora and Fauna

This country has a number of sanctuaries and zoos that are home to some rare and not-so-rare animals. The Jaguar Preserve, for instance, offers an extensive jungle hiking trail in Belize. Plants are identified for you along the trails. It’s at this sanctuary that you can see the Jaguar, largest cat in this part of the world.

The Belize zoo is another top attraction around. Other than learning the interesting history of this zoo you also interact with animals in a rather different way to what you’re used to. Here animals are not caged behind iron bars like in most of the zoos back in your home country. Instead, they are kept in an environment that is as close to their natural environment as possible. Here too there are hundreds of flowers and plant species for the flora-minded visitors.

Fascinating Caves

This area is home to some of the most fascinating caves on the planet. These caves part of the story of this country. Why? The Maya used these caves as ceremonial sites. Why not explore these caves to see first-hand the evidence of the activities of these ancient people. Some of the notable caves include Actun Tunichil Muknal, Actub Loch Tunich, Rio Frio Cave, Chem Chem Hah, St. Herman’s and others that merit your attention.

Belize Food

Whether you are coming for a vacation or you want to settle hear as an expat one thing you certainly shouldn’t miss is the taste of Belizean food. Locals here are very good at cooking tasty and uniquely local food. Some of it might be what you already know but prepared with a local touch. Why not try Ceviche? This is seafood steeped and diced in lime juice under refrigeration then tossed with onions, tomatoes, sliced cucumber, chopped cilantro, habanero pepper, and black pepper. Sounds like something you’d want to taste. You actually should.

The list of local dishes here is endless. When you land here try to find out what these dishes are and have a taste: Cochnita Pibil, Tamales, Johnny Cakes, Belize Fruit Cakes just to mention a few.
